INFECTIOUS CORYZA

ETIOLOGY
This disease coused by a bacteria Haemophilus para gallinarum. The source of infection are carrier bird. Found on the farm itself, the disease can spread throught water, air and feed, The organisms are of 3 serotypes namely, as A, B, And C (formerly 1, 2, ,3) based on biochemic and antigenic differences and based on kume haemagglutin serotyping scheme.
B. strains are most pathogenic, the disease may occur as a mixed infection of mycoplasma gallisepticum and H pallagallinarum in broiler in 7week of age.
swollen head syndrome is another disease which may be confused with infectious coryza, This syndrome is of unknown etiology. Broiler breeder flock suffer from disease with 2 to 3 % drop in age production, some flock 60% show antibodies to turkey rhinotracheitis virus

Host:
The disease is mostly found in young adult birds.
For diagnosis, haemagglutination inhibition (HI) and dott-blothing test are relible. To produce suitable antigens for these test chicken meat infusion (CMI) broth and agar are suitable. the dot blotthing test can be used to serotype large number of strains...

One of the field test is to inoculate the nasal secretion of a suspected sick bird into the nostrils of a suspectible, healthy bird. the desease should develop in the bird in 24 the test bird 24 to 48 hours.

Treatment
Sulpachloropydazine and trimethoprim (1:5) is a combination of choice. it is easely soluble in drinking water, or sulphadiazine and trimethoprim, sulphathizole and trimethoprim, sulphadimidhine, ampicillin, tiamulin, Mycomulin concept. diamatilin, gentamicyn, erythromicyn, Enrofloxacin, pefloxatin, Flumeqin are other effective drugs for mass treatment of poultry. Amoxycillin cal also be given in drinking water as "fulse dosing" for 3 to 5 days, against the gram negative organism sulphachloropyridazine is reported to be 3 time more potent than sulphadiazine and sulphamethazole. sulphachloropyridazine also effective against grampositive organisms.

Prevention

1. If the disease affect a layer flock it is better to start with fresh stock since carries bird (symptomless) do exist even after recovery.
2. The casual bacteria are fragile. they are killed in 2 min at 55C, in 6 hours at room temperature an few days in winter temperature.
3. Cleanlines and good management can prevent the disease.
4. Keep the density of bird to minimum

Key Point for diagnosis.

1. Sudden drop in egg production
2. Nasal and ocular discharge
3. Swelling of face and sinus just in front of the eyes.
